Seven days after grabbing the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Helsinki, striker Smith came up with the decisive effort as the Reds got the better of Leeds United 3-2 in Tampa.
This was the first game in a three-match USA pre-season tour for Phil Parkinson’s side and fans were certainly entertained at the Raymond James Stadium.
Dom Hyam, back in the States after being a part of Scotland’s World Cup squad, led the team out as captain, joined in the backline by Zak Vyner and Lewis Brunt.
Arthur Okonkwo was given the nod in goal, with Aaron James and George Thomason taking up the wing back berths.
Things could not have started in better fashion for Wrexham, who were ahead after just 32 seconds.
Thomason who charged forward and fed Kieffer Moore on the left and his strike picked out the corner of the net.
Leeds had a great chance to level when they were awarded a penalty after Okonkwo fouled Welsh international Daniel James in the box.
However, Joel Piroe’s penalty hit the post.
Nathan Broadhead was so close to stretching the Reds’ lead after a quarter-of-an-hour. His 25-yard free kick hit the crossbar and Moore headed over from the rebound.
Leeds managed to level things up in the 29th minute as Sean Langstaff pulled the ball back and Piroe’s backheel found the target.
Willy Gnonto had two glimpses of goal for United as the first half ticked down, being denied by Hyam and Okonkwo, before Wrexham moved back in front.
Bailey Cadamarteri burst through a tackle and coolly rounded Alex Cairns to slot home his first Wrexham goal.
There was still time for United to tie things up prior to the interval.
In stoppage time, Aaron James blocked Callum Mills’ shot, but Longstaff scored from the rebound.
There were three Wrexham changes at the interval, with Max Cleworth, Ryan Longman and Libby Cacace replaced Vyner, Aaron James and Thomason.
Wrexham-born Welsh international Harry Wilson came on for his Leeds debut, one of six changes made by United.
Wilson soon set up Gnonto for an effort, which was saved by Okonkwo.
Wrexham went on to make their other changes on the hour-mark. Okonkwo was replaced by Callum Burton.
Dan Scarr and Callum Doyle came into the backline, while Ollie Rathbone and Harry Ashfield were added to the centre of midfield came on in central midfield.
Ryan Barnett moved into an attacking midfield role and Davis Keillor-Dunn played in behind Sam Smith.
Doyle blazed his shot over after charging forward with 20 minutes left, before Smith sealed the victory in the 85th minute.
Keillor-Dunn’s pass supplied the opportunity, with Smith jinking right and left before coolly putting his left-footed effort in.
