Shop had replaced popular arts hub in south Liverpool community but has now been issued with a closure order10:58, 04 May 2026Updated 12:52, 04 May 2026The Corner Shop on Aigburth Road has been shut down over links to criminality A ‘corner shop’ that replaced a popular south Liverpool arts store has been shut down after being linked to criminality and anti-social behaviour. The business, called The Corner Shop and situated at the corner of Aigburth Road and Allington Street in Aigburth, opened last year. The shop, which sold tobacco, vapes, sweets and American drinks, replaced the popular Arts Hub 47, which displayed the work of local artists for a number of years. The Corner Shop followed a similar trend to a large number of other so-called convenience stores that have popped up around Liverpool in recent years in terms of the products it was selling and the brightly-lit design of the store. But in recent days, local people have noticed the business has been shut down, with a notice placed on its shutters. That notice states: “Closed. Liverpool City Council, working in close partnership with Merseyside Police, have obtained a closure order to protect your neighbourhood from the criminality and anti-social behaviour taking place at this property.”On the specific closure order, posted below this sign, it explains the business was shut down on April 8 after the council applied for the order for a period of three months, starting from April 9.With the business owners not attending the subsequent court case, it was found either the use of the premises or a person at the premises had resulted in disorderly, offensive or criminal behaviour or that this would likely occur without such an order being made. The Corner Shop on Aigburth Road has been shut down over links to criminality The closure order prohibits access by all people at all times to the premises in question, unless they have written permission from the council to do so or are a member of the emergency services. The order adds: “Any person who without reasonable excuse remains on or enters the premises in contravention of a closure order commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to imprisonment for a period not exceeding 6 months or to a fine or both.”While the details of this case and what has led to the closure order are not yet known, the ECHO has written previously about some of the issues with the proliferation of these sorts of businesses across the city.Last May we asked, if the remarkable volume of brightly-lit stores selling vapes, crisps and drinks are good for the wider fabric of the city.A recent BBC investigation found, across the country, shopfronts are being exploited by organised criminal gangs who are using them to push illegal drugs. The Home Office has said it is working with the police, the National Crime Agency and Trading Standards on this growing issue.
