They found $18K of ‘missing money’ for their family. Why won’t N.J. hand it over?

New Jersey could be holding onto money that’s got your name on it.Or the name of a deceased relative.The state’s Unclaimed Property Administration holds a massive $6.5 billion of unclaimed funds. The funds are property that somewhere along the line, were forgotten about, lost or misplaced by the rightful owners. It could be a security deposit from an old apartment, an insurance payout, a long-lost retirement account or other funds.One in seven New Jersey residents has unclaimed assets, the state said.When Susan and Stuart Cohen took a look in the state’s database in 2018 to see if they had any forgotten assets, they found $18,229.55 in the names of two deceased relatives: Stuart’s step-mother, who died in 2009, and his step-brother, who died in 2002.“They have no blood relatives alive,” Susan Cohen said. “My husband applied to claim the money but was told `steps’ don’t count, and therefore he was not eligible to claim the money.”Rose Cohen (right) in a 1994…
