Kolhapur: As preparations in the Mahalaxmi temple in the city are in full swing ahead of Navaratra, gold jewellery, including those studded with diamonds, belonging to the presiding deity of goddess Mahalaxmi were cleaned by goldsmiths under security on Sunday.While primary works of cleaning the sanctum sanctorum, the temple, painting its shikhar (spire), and installing CCTV cameras have already been completed by the administration, on Sunday, goldsmiths were brought in to clean the goddess’s jewellery and palanquin.Some of these ornaments date back centuries, while others are fairly recent. Then there are other sets of jewellery donated by devotees, that are occasionally put on the idol during the rest of the year.Mahalaxmi temple manager Mahadev Dinde said, “The jewellery is cleaned by a group of ‘sonar’ (goldsmith). They render their service free of cost. The old jewellery mostly needs cleaning to bring back the shine and also to ensure preservation for a long time.”After…
