Monsoons officially end in Pune, dams near full capacity

Pune has started to feel the heat since last weekend with many talking of an early onset of what is known as the “October heat”. Anupam Kashyapi, former head of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), said this was due to the lack of cloud cover and the presence of moisture in the air.
Kashyapi said the cloud cover, which had acted as an insulation for the heat, has more or less vanished. “Thus, the heat load is high and is affecting the feel of the temperature,” he said.
In addition to this, the presence of moisture in the air — which is not enough for rains — can add to the discomfort felt during the middle of the day. “This heat is not as deadly, provided prolonged exposure is avoided,” he said.
These conditions will continue for some time, according to weather predictions.
