NBA Toys With Changing Rules On Buzzer-Beater Shots

If it drives you crazy that NBA players wait until after the halftime buzzer to heave that half-court shot, the league agrees. The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov reports on BlueSky that the NBA plans to experiment with a rule change for buzzer-beaters, starting with an experimental test in the G League.
NBA is doing some experimenting in the G League this season. Any end-of-quarter shot attempt from about 36 feet out or further taken in the last 3 seconds of the first 3 quarters (and if play starts in backcourt) will go down as a team FG attempt and not attributed to a player.
NBA players have increasing eschewed long shots at quarterly buzzers, generally accepted to be due to the risk of artificially lowering a player’s field goal and three-point percentages over the season. While one shot is unlikely to make a difference (with rare exceptions), over a season, this could add up to 25 or more missed shots for the player accepting the inbound pass.
