FIREFIGHTERS say the number of outdoor blazes across Staffordshire doubled in July compared to the same time last year.
Recent statistics have revealed that Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to around 600 outdoor fires last month – an average of 20 incidents every day.
Head of operations Martin Weaver said:
“These latest statistics are shocking and highlight the significant increased demand that we are currently experiencing.
“It is important to remember that each incident is not just a number, it is landscapes damaged and lives put at risk.
“The 600 outdoor fires are also in addition to all the other types of incident that our crews deal with on a daily basis.”
He added that the number of incidents “cannot become the norm” – and urged people to take steps to support the efforts of fire crews.
Martin said:
“This high number of incidents cannot become the norm and so we’re asking for people to support us in some simple ways.
“Firstly, if you have teenage kids make sure they understand the consequences of starting fires. They may see it as a bit of fun; the reality is it could land them with a criminal record and impact on their professional careers for a large part of their lives.
“Secondly, accidental fires are often preventable – whether that’s out in the countryside using disposable BBQs and dropping cigarettes, or at home burning waste in your back garden – these are all practices that can quickly start fires.
“Finally, we need help in spreading our message – we need the people of Staffordshire to be aware of the consequences and know the simple steps they can take to reduce fires and ensure that message is shared.
“We have seen a number of devastating fires nationally this year – please help us keep Staffordshire safe this summer.”
