While the immediate economic impact is hugely important, the real value lies in the lasting profile and international recognition an event of this scale brings,” said Natalie Wyatt, Liverpool City Region destination partnership managing director.Since 2006, the Open has been held in the region for an impressive six times. Royal Birkdale and Royal Liverpool have had an even share in that.The local economy has benefited immensely and this year’s Open generated £200m, which is at an all-time high.“Securing future championships gives us a fantastic platform to attract more visitors, encourage investment and support long-term growth across our tourism and hospitality sectors for years to come,” added Wyatt. On top of that, it was 70,000 fans more than what Royal Birkdale had witnessed in 2017.However, The Open returns to St. Andrews next year, and it is very likely to beat Royal Birkdale’s record.
