Leeds United centre-back Sebastiaan Bornauw is reportedly set to leave the club for Hamburg this week.
Pre-season is of course not to be judged wholeheartedly as concrete proof of what will follow. But, it’s encouraging when squad players start showing their worth.
Sebastiaan Bornauw comes into that category. The Belgian centre-back has impressed as he’s stepped in for Gabriel Gudmundsson, filling in well alongside new signing Tarik Muharemovic.
Hamburg close to signing Sebastiaan Bornauw from Leeds United
Well, it was encouraging to see Bornauw’s strong displays during wins over Sunderland, Liverpool, and RB Leipzig. But, it might not lead to more faith in the Premier League.
That’s because a move to Bundesliga side Hamburg appears to be close. It’s reported by Hamburger Abendblatt that he’s “slated” in to be their next signing in defence, while that is also sharted by X account HSV Transfers.
Importantly, that second source claims that Bornauw will be joining Hamburg on loan, which is “very far advanced” between the two clubs.
Bornauw only joined a year ago from Wolfsburg, signed for £5million on a four-year-deal. The 27-year-old has three more years on his current contract.

If these reports of a loan are true, then it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense from Leeds’ perspective.
We’d need to replace him and it’s a position that we’re not already having to look at. It would be an added priority on top of our ongoing businsess, so loaning him out with no incoming fee eats into our budget to replace him and sign other players.
Now, if we’re to sell Bornauw this summer, that would be much more palatable as we can replace him with the money we raise.
I’d be a bit frustrated to see him go, though. He’s shown on multiple occasions that he’s capable of digging in for us in tough games.
That said, I also wouldn’t begrudge him leaving to play every week, which is likely at Hamburg.
